Explore Rippon Lodge Historic Site in Woodbridge, VA

A Glimpse into Colonial Virginia

Rippon Lodge, located at 15520 Blackburn Road in Woodbridge, Virginia, is one of the oldest surviving homes in Prince William County. Built around 1747 by Richard Blackburn, the estate was once part of a vast tobacco and wheat plantation situated near Neabsco Creek and the Potomac River. The name “Rippon” is derived from Blackburn’s birthplace of Ripon, England.

Historic Significance and Legacy

Colonial Roots: Richard Blackburn established a 21,000-acre plantation that operated with enslaved labor. The plantation had direct access to waterways for shipping goods to England.

Revolutionary War Connection: Blackburn’s son, Col. Thomas Blackburn, fought for American independence. The family’s estate was used by Continental Army troops and lay along the historic King’s Highway, now known as U.S. Route 1.

Preservation Over Time: After remaining with the Blackburn family until the early 1800s, Rippon Lodge passed through several owners and was later restored in the Colonial Revival style. Richard Blackburn Black, a descendant and naval officer, eventually donated the property to Prince William County in 2000.
